Windows Vista Support
As times change, the most commonly used Operating Systems change also. This section is dsigned to provide Vista-specific support to clients utilizing Microsoft's newest incantation of the Windows environment.

Much of IntraNet transitions seamlessly from older, more common OS's such as Linux and Windows XP, however, due to changes in standards and web technologies, some aspects of IntraNet's usage and management have now changed.

Installing ActiveX Components

Due to increased security on Windows Vista, extra steps must now be taken when installing programs and features, including the IntraNet Component Manager.

Windows Vista works very differently from XP when dealing with Admin accounts. By default, in Windows XP, the first User created when installing the operating system is an administrative 'superuser' by default. This account has open access to the file structure and can download files and install programs at will. This is not the case in Windows Vista - a regular user, even the original user marked as Administrator, requires further configuration in order to download and install certain programs.

Following are the steps required to install the Intra.Net Component Manager and ensure proper functionality:

Part A - Deactivating UAC and Installing the Component Manager

By default, Windows Vista accounts have the User Access Control or UAC Enabled. This feature is created to allow Adminstrators to standardise PC environments for company employees. This feature must be disabled in order for the IntraNet Component Manager to be installed. UAC may be enabled following successful installation of the components if necessary (see Part B).

Step 1 - Turn Off User Access Control (UAC)

From the Start menu select 'Control Panel'. Select 'User Accounts and Family Safety':

then 'User Accounts':

then 'Turn User Account Control on or off':

In this window, ensure the checkbox marked 'User User Account Control..' is unchecked as shown:

Click 'OK' to confirm. Vista will now prompt the user to restart the machine to deactivate UAC.

When the PC restarts, the user can now browse to IntraNet where they will be prompted to install the ActiveX Components. If IE has not previously attempted to install a program, a notice will be shown to the user:

Click the 'Close' button to close the Alert window and left-click on the yellow bar to instruct IE to install the component:

The IE Add-On Installer will then prompt the user to install the Intra.Net Component Manager. Click 'Install' as shown:

The Intra.Net Component Manager has now been successfully installed. The last step is to ensure that the Drag&Drop feature is intalled. Simply navigate to a Document Manager and IntraNet will prompt the user automatically. Click 'OK' as shown and the feature will be installed:

Part B (optional) - Re-activating UAC

If online company security is an important aspect of deciding how to setup employee desktop environments, UAC can be re-activated to provide that extra level of security after the IntraNet components have been installed. In order to utilize the Component Manager functionality and maintain UAC security, the IntraNet URL must be added to the list of Trusted Sites.

To add a URL to the Trusted Sites list, select InterNet Explorer 'Tools' and 'Options'. In the 'Security' tab, select 'Trusted Sites' and click the 'Sites' button as shown:

In the new Trusted Sites window, enter the IntraNet URL and click 'Add':

The IntraNet URL will now be in the list of Trusted Sites, displayed in the textbox below:

The user may then follow the steps shown in Part A to navigate back to the UAC window and ensure that the checkbox is checked to signify that UAC is enabled.

ActiveX Troubleshooting and Information

IntraNet utilizes ActiveX Components in order to provide certain functionality to users. These features include IntraNet's Rich-Text and HTML application IntraEditor, Drag&Drop and more.

One of the features known to be incompatible with Windows Vista is the 'Show Local Files' button that allows users to view local files within the IntraNet environment.
